GEO Tracker: How to Measure Your Generative Engine Optimization Performance

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) requires its own tracking system. Here is how to measure GEO performance, what metrics matter, and which tools track it accurately.

Why GEO Needs Its Own Tracking System

When search was just Google, rank trackers like Ahrefs and SEMrush told you everything you needed to know. Position 1 meant visibility. Position 11 meant invisible.

Generative AI has changed this completely. There is no "position" in an AI-generated answer — your brand either appears or it doesn't. And when it does appear, the sentiment attached to that mention matters as much as the mention itself.

GEO tracking requires a fundamentally different approach.

What a GEO Tracker Measures

MentionShare Score

Your MentionShare is the percentage of target buyer-intent prompts where your brand is cited by AI engines. It is the primary GEO KPI.

Formula: (Number of prompt/engine combinations where your brand is cited) / (Total prompt/engine combinations tracked) × 100

A MentionShare of 35% means your brand appears in 35% of all tracked buyer-intent AI queries.

Sentiment Distribution

Not all mentions are equal. A GEO tracker classifies each mention:

  • ▸Positive — AI recommends your brand as a solution
  • ▸Neutral — AI mentions your brand without strong recommendation
  • ▸Negative — AI associates your brand with limitations

Target: 70%+ positive mentions among all cited responses.

Engine Coverage

Which AI engines cite you? A brand might have strong ChatGPT coverage but zero Perplexity presence. Engine-level data tells you where to focus optimization effort.

Competitor MentionShare

How does your MentionShare compare to your top competitors? Relative performance tells you your competitive position in AI search.

Trend Over Time

Is your MentionShare growing, stable, or declining? Monthly trend data shows whether your GEO efforts are working and catches drops before they affect pipeline.

Setting Up Your GEO Tracking System

Step 1: Define Your Tracking Prompts

Your GEO tracker is only as good as the prompts you track. Build a list of 15-20 buyer-intent prompts that represent real questions your buyers ask AI engines.

Categories to include:

  • ▸Category awareness: "What is [your category]?"
  • ▸Solution seeking: "What is the best tool for [use case]?"
  • ▸Comparison: "How does [your product] compare to [competitor]?"
  • ▸Buyer-intent: "Which [category] platform should I use?"

Step 2: Select Your Engines

Track at minimum: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude. Add Grok, DeepSeek, Copilot, Meta AI, and Google AIO for comprehensive coverage.

Step 3: Establish Your Baseline

Run your first full scan to establish baseline metrics:

Step 4: Set Up Monthly Tracking
