When search was just Google, rank trackers like Ahrefs and SEMrush told you everything you needed to know. Position 1 meant visibility. Position 11 meant invisible.
Generative AI has changed this completely. There is no "position" in an AI-generated answer — your brand either appears or it doesn't. And when it does appear, the sentiment attached to that mention matters as much as the mention itself.
GEO tracking requires a fundamentally different approach.
Your MentionShare is the percentage of target buyer-intent prompts where your brand is cited by AI engines. It is the primary GEO KPI.
Formula: (Number of prompt/engine combinations where your brand is cited) / (Total prompt/engine combinations tracked) × 100
A MentionShare of 35% means your brand appears in 35% of all tracked buyer-intent AI queries.
Not all mentions are equal. A GEO tracker classifies each mention:
Target: 70%+ positive mentions among all cited responses.
Which AI engines cite you? A brand might have strong ChatGPT coverage but zero Perplexity presence. Engine-level data tells you where to focus optimization effort.
How does your MentionShare compare to your top competitors? Relative performance tells you your competitive position in AI search.
Is your MentionShare growing, stable, or declining? Monthly trend data shows whether your GEO efforts are working and catches drops before they affect pipeline.
Your GEO tracker is only as good as the prompts you track. Build a list of 15-20 buyer-intent prompts that represent real questions your buyers ask AI engines.
